Types of Bones

1. long bone

It is a tubular bone that can be distinguished vertically long from the two epiphysis and one diaphysis.

The epiphysis develops from the secondary ossification center at the slightly swollen part of the end of the long (tube) bone, and when this is the joint surface, the articular cartilage covers its surface.

The epiphyseal cartilage is a plate-like hyaline cartilage located between the epiphyseal end and the diaphysis of the growth phase.

Diaphysis is surrounded by hard cortical bone (dense bone), and there is almost no cancellous bone in the center.

The metaphyseal part is the end part of the diaphyse that contacts the epiphyseal cartilage, not included in the epiphysis.

Example) Femur, humerus, clavicle, tibia, fibula, metacarpal, metatarsal, etc.

2. short bone

It is a short bone, unlike the above-mentioned long (tube) bone, it can not distinguish epiphysis and diaphysis.

Example) carpal bone, tarsal bone

3. flat bone

Thin flat shape.

Example) scapula, sternum, ilium, parietal bone, rib

4. irregular bone

A bone not belonging to the aforementioned long (pipe) bone, short bone, flattened bone and the like.

Example) Vertebrae, sacrum, coccyx, temporal bone, sphenoid bone, ethmoid bone, ruffle, maxilla, mandible, palate, inferior turbinate, hyoid bone

※ Some are classified as both irregular bone and pneumatic bone.

5. pneumatic bone

Have a cavity and sinus filled with air and covered with mucous membranes.

Example) Facial bone, sinus bones (frontal bone, maxillary bone, sphenoid bone, ethmoid bone)

※ Some are classified as both irregular bone and pneumatic bone.

6. sesamoid bone

After birth, regularly formed in certain parts of the tendon over the joint, etc.

Example) Patella (largest seed bone in the human body), bean-like bone, palm side of the first metacarpal head, bottom side of the first metatarsal head
